19 Mar The Truth About GLP-1 & GIP Agonists: Ozempic, Tirzepatide & Retatrutide
I have been keeping a close eye on these since 2019, with Ozempic releasing in 2020. I can’t deny they are effective, they are pricey and a lot of what I try to teach my clients still remains true!
So Let’s Dig In:
New medications such as Ozempic (semaglutide), Tirzepatide (Mounjaro), and the emerging drug Retatrutide are transforming obesity treatment. These drugs deliver impressive weight loss results, but they also come with side effects and risks of rebound weight gain. Managing these challenges is vital for long-term success.
Seriously, you can’t just inject powerful medications without a plan, knowing it well—not just what someone said.
Understanding the Medications
Ozempic (Semaglutide)
Originally developed for type 2 diabetes, Ozempic has become widely used for weight loss. It mimics GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1), a hormone that helps control appetite and blood sugar.
📊 The STEP 1 trial showed participants using semaglutide lost an average of 14.9% of their body weight over 68 weeks.
Tirzepatide (Mounjaro)
This dual-acting drug targets GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide), boosting weight loss even further.
📊 The SURMOUNT-1 trial found participants lost up to 22.5% of their body weight over 72 weeks, one of the most impressive results to date.
Retatrutide (Still in Clinical Trials)
Retatrutide represents a novel class of obesity medication targeting multiple metabolic pathways. Early studies indicate substantial weight loss potential, though more research is needed.
Managing Side Effects
Side effects are common, especially when starting these medications or increasing the dose. Here are some key issues and solutions:
🔸 Nausea & Vomiting
💡 Solution: Gradual dose increases, smaller meals, and avoiding greasy or rich foods can help.
🔸 Diarrhea or Constipation
💡 Solution: Increase fiber intake, drink plenty of water, and consider probiotics.
🔸 Fatigue & Weakness
💡 Solution: Ensure adequate protein intake and adopt regular meal timing.
🔸 Injection Site Reactions
💡 Solution: Rotate injection sites and follow correct injection techniques.
Minimizing Rebound Weight Gain
To reduce the risk of regaining weight after stopping these medications, consider these strategies:
1️⃣ Sustain Healthy Eating Habits – While on medication, focus on building long-term dietary patterns. Prioritize whole foods, lean proteins, and high-fiber meals.
2️⃣ Incorporate Strength Training – Muscle mass is key to maintaining metabolic rate and reducing fat regain.
3️⃣ Build Behavioral Support – Counseling, support groups, or weight management programs can help reinforce positive habits.
4️⃣ Taper Off Gradually – Reducing the medication dose slowly, under medical supervision, can ease the transition and limit weight rebound.
5️⃣ Ongoing Medical Guidance – Regular follow-ups with healthcare providers help monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed.
Medications like Ozempic, Tirzepatide, and Retatrutide are powerful tools for weight loss, but they work best when combined with sustainable lifestyle changes. Managing side effects and planning for long-term success are key to maintaining results.
Always consult your doctor before starting or discontinuing these medications.
You still need to train, but how can you if you’re battling fatigue?
So be prepared to work for it. Don’t use it as a crutch—use it as a tool to solidify the habits I try to instill in my clients daily.
